How to protect yourself when hiring a contractor
A few simple habits before, during and after a project can save a lot of stress for both you and the person doing the work.
Start with a clear scope
Write down what you want done in plain language: rooms, materials, finishes and anything that is out of scope. A shared, written scope makes it easier to compare quotes and to agree on when a step is finished.
Check licenses and insurance
Ask for the contractor's license number and proof of insurance, then look them up yourself with the state or the insurer. Requirements vary by trade and project, so ask what applies to yours.
Tie payments to progress
Instead of paying large sums for work that hasn't started, agree on milestones with a clear description and amount for each one. You release each payment when that step is done.
Keep everything in writing
Save the agreement, change orders, photos and messages in one place. If questions come up later, a written record helps everyone remember what was agreed.
