Milestone payments explained

Milestone payments split a project into steps, each with its own amount. Here's how the idea works and why both sides tend to like it.

What a milestone is

A milestone is a defined chunk of work, like demolition, rough plumbing or final walkthrough, with a set dollar amount attached. The milestones add up to the full project price.

How the money moves

In a funded milestone setup, the client puts the full budget in up front. A payments partner holds it, and each milestone's share is released to the contractor when the client approves that step.

What counts as done

Good milestones describe what “complete” looks like, often with photos or a short checklist. That keeps approvals quick and reduces back-and-forth.

When plans change

Projects change. When the scope moves, update the milestone list in writing so the amounts still match the work.
